Product Information –

This pre-made whole spice mix is renowned for the quick popping sounds it makes as it hits a hot pan swirled with ghee or mustard oil. Panch phoron means “five tempering spices” in a variety of Indian languages, and is a subtle, non-spicy flavouring used in the mild but complex cuisines of eastern India, Bangladesh and Nepal. Made of fenugreek, nigella, cumin, fennel and black mustard seeds, panch phoron is always used whole and never ground, added to hot oil before vegetables, meat or lentils hit the pan.

It can be used to make the simplest of dals and vegetable dishes, but is also used in unusual dishes like the sweet Bengali tomato chutney, eaten with savoury and spicy papad. Panch phoron also makes a yummilicious seafood broth.

Panch phoron is a spice blend that adapts easily to vegan cooking, brightening up a simple Indian vegetable stir-fry or a cozy lentil soup. You can use it to create a wide variety of south Asian dishes.
